Egg: The striking feature of this egg, is the impression of a dark oil globule, due to a dense cluster of black dots attached ventrally, magnified by the lens effect of the oil globule. The oil globule itself is clear. Yolk segmentation is dense throughout the yolk.Care needs to be taken not to confuse it with EIIIB4A.

Larva: The newly hatched larva has pale yellow pigment along the dorsal and ventral edges of the notochord, interspersed with black, the latter especially dorsally and ventrally, around the anus. By day 2, the yellow pattern has arranged as in C, while at 3 days it is receding, leaving a prominent patch of black pigment dorsally post-anus (D & E).  B: NH, C: 2 days, D & E: 3 days (24°C). The two additional images are 4 and 6 days respectively.

DNA barcoding has shown that this egg belongs to Caranx sem, based on 16 larval barcodes all matching 5 locally collected adult fish (BOLD).

The limited amount of data indicates this is a warm water egg, with the majority seen in December and January (blue graph). The egg was not seen in the DHM samples. The Park Rynie linked samples, though very limited, show 83% of these eggs inshore, indicating it spawns close to the surfzone. See Section 7.3 and Table 1 of the Introductory Notes, for more information on the linked samples.
